HND Food Technology With Business Management
Reaseheath College Cheshire

Management Trainee / Food Technologist, Daloon Foods (UK) Ltd. Notts.

My HND in conjunction with Harper Adams University College was a sandwich course involving two industrial placements. The first was with HP Foods based at the Lea & Perrins Factory in Worcestershire where they manufacture, amongst other things, the famous Worcestershire Sauce. I chose this to improve my hands on approach to quality assurance, using lab equipment and to learn more about product development. My second placement was at Richmond Frozen Confectionery, Europe's largest independent frozen food manufacturer, where I was able to apply my interpersonal skills running production lines.

On graduating, I was awarded top food student of my year, and a bursary sponsored by Daloon Foods (UK) Ltd, organised by the British Frozen Food Federation. I spent 4 months at the BFFF head offices, where I gained an unrivalled insight into frozen food. I organised the collection and aided the judging for the British Frozen Food Federation annual awards. I also spent time at Daloon Foods Ltd. (UK) in development and production, reviewing manufacturing capacities.

After the bursary sponsored year at Daloon, I became a permanent member of the Daloon development team as a Management Trainee / Food Technologist. I am now developing frozen ethnic foods for some of the top food retailers, both in the UK and abroad, as well as for the Daloon brand. In this challenging role, I have presented samples, communicated new ideas to board level, scaled up production from test kitchen to full scale production and organised consumer panelling plus many other activities.

Daloon foods are sponsoring me to improve my career prospects within the Daloon Group. As well as my role as a management trainee I am now studying for a BSc.(Hons) in Food Science at Nottingham Trent University on a part time basis. I believe that having a positive attitude to everything you do, coupled with good solid training, both on the job and academic, combined with support and guidance is the key to success.

I enjoy interacting with customers and working as part of a team in an ever challenging environment. I have now been invited to assist the work of the IFST’s Public Affairs Committee which advises the IFST on food matters of public interest.

I am glad I chose to study Food Science as it has enabled me to experience exciting and challenging times in the food industry and hopefully......make a difference.
