Hi my name is Hannah Lutkin. I graduated from Sheffield Hallam University with a first class honours degree in Food and Consumer Studies. I have always had an interest in food – both studying it and eating it! I studied Home Economics at both GCSE and A level and therefore my degree was a natural progression from this. I chose to study Food and Consumer studies as I felt it would be a course which would offer me a good foundation for a career within the food industry. It provided me with an insight into both the food science and marketing of food.

I chose to work in the food industry as it is a fast moving, ever changing industry which provides many varied challenges. The food industry is all about consumers, shoppers and retailers demanding higher quality product goods at competitive prices – working within this environment provides an opportunity to market dynamic and innovative products to meet this requiremement.

I am currently on the Northern Foods graduate scheme working for Pork Farms Bowyers, however previous to this I carried out a year's placement (as part of my degree) at another Northern Foods site – Pennine Foods which produce chilled ready meals for Marks and Spencer. At Pennine Foods I worked within the technical area developing new ready meals and as a result I launched around fifteen new products in a year. This year provided me with excellent experience of the real working world within a very fast moving business, an experience which has proved invaluable to me since I have started working for Pork Farms Bowyers.

At Pork Farms Bowyers I am a commercial trainee within the sales and marketing department. My training is made up of several mini placements. For my first placement I was working within the Category Management department, which provided me with an insight into the market in which Pork Farms Bowyers operate. Whilst working with the Category Management team I gained wide exposure to the company's customer base, whilst also learning about the product categories and gaining an understanding of product, consumer and market information and how this can be used by the business to make better decisions.

This formed a firm foundation for my next placement in marketing. My main responsibility as product manager within the marketing team was to manage the implementation of product related projects through the company from concept to launch. For example in Spring, I was working on Christmas, which involved introducing new products, designing the Christmas packaging and working with manufacturing to ensure that the factory has capacity to cope with the new products. All of which needed to be completed by July to ensure we have listings with the major multiples.

When I have finished my marketing placement I am moving on to work with the Sales team for a year where I will have responsibility for my own accounts.

My goal over the next two years is to gain as much commercial awareness and experience as possible. The opportunity I have been given at Pork Farms Bowyers is fantastic and I would certainly recommend a career in the food industry to anyone!
